The Great Smoky Mountains
Since we got married, Phil and I have many years full of wonderful memories spending time with his family in the Great Smoky Mountains. This particular cabin is in Wear's Valley and was absolutely gorgeous. While we enjoyed our trip, we were saddened by the reason for it: Grandmother Joy's memorial service. The service took place in Eusebia Presbyterian church, which is 226 years old. Avery and Kayla spent much of the service sitting with Ninny and Grandaddy. Kayla even accompanied Grandaddy on the pulpit during his eulogy and (for once) she was very quiet and still.

Traveling to Tennessee
Over Memorial Day weekend, we travelled to Knoxville, TN, for Phil's grandmother's memorial service. Grandmother Joy lived a full life to 99 years of age. We started driving after work on Friday, with the intention of letting the kids sleep in the car for most of the trip. (Thank GOD that we miraculously avoided two major accidents during this trip, one that would have kept us sitting on I-40 all night long.) Here are some pics of us at 2 different McDonald's playplaces during our trip. And before you get all judgemental and say, "Emily, why did you send your 7 foot tall husband with herniated discs through the enclosed tunnels sized for munchkins when you are only 5'2"??", just remember that I am basically the only one that takes photos in this family. Don't worry; I had my turns in these nasty, dirt-filled, claustrophobia-inducing tunnels, chasing after my two kids who are obviously more flexible than me. (And I loved every second of it!)

Single Mom 2012
I was quite proud of myself that I survived the four days Phil was gone on his guy's trip (why is it that the guys can manage to get away but us girls can not???). That was the longest I have been left alone with two kids by myself: 2 kids + 24 hours a day X 4 days = 1 tired Mommy. I know that army spouses and wives of traveling salesmen are mocking me right now. But the first time is the hardest! Not only did I survive, I even went above and beyond and took the kids to the Children's Museum one morning in downtown Charleston. Keeping an eye on two kids in small spaces that is filled with everyone else's crazy kids was quite challenging...luckily, Miss Kayla didn't want to be too far from her brother, so I guess my kids threw this novice a bone.
